What is the Science of Engagement?

Based on the AGES Model for effective learning, the science of engagement can be broken down into several fundamental principles: attention, generation, emotion, spacing, and measurement.

  • Attention refers to the idea that you have to get your audience’s attention – and then hold it.
  • Generation involves creating relevance. For engagement to happen, listeners need to understand how information connects with them personally.
  • Emotion is critical for message impact. Strong emotions lead to strong memories. Make your audience feel something and they will be more likely to do something.
  • Spacing involves the importance of delivering your message in intervals and then repeating it, to be remembered and retained.
  • Measurement is the insight and reflection that occurs when you can track and see the results of engagement efforts across a workforce.
